Schools & Cybersecurity
For those of us who grew up in the 1980s, there was a PSA that said: It's 10pm, do you know where your children are?
When I read this article on the White House K-12 School Cyber Security Summit, I couldn't help thinking that while we all know where our kids are ALL THE TIME (thanks to smart phones), we really have no idea where their data is, who's collecting that data, where it's stored, or how it's being used.
When Back to Basics talks about School Safety as a pillar, we have to include data integrity as part of our safety pillar. Consider that:
Earlier this year, MN schools were attacked, exposing records about child abuse inquiries, student mental health crises and campus physical security details.
LA public schools also experienced an attack where student's mental health data was released.
Schools are now the single leading target for hackers, outpacing health care, technology, financial services and manufacturing industries, according to a global survey of IT professionals released last month by the British cybersecurity company Sophos.
How confident are you that WCASD is doing their part to protect your child's data?
